Madrid, ‘World Capital of Sports’… and European capital of badminton
The European Badminton Championships joins the list of major events of Madrid World Capital of Sports 2022.
Madrid is the World Capital of Sports 2022, a distinction granted by the association ACES Europe (European Federation of Sports Cities) that will fill the city with top-level events and that will attract millions of sports fans from all over the world to the Madrid capital. The 2022 European Badminton Championships has been the last to join the long list of major events, in another example of the Madrid city council’s involvement and commitment to physical activity and the implementation of sports policies, both in terms of regarding infrastructures as well as the effort to promote sport among its citizens.
After the granting of the European Championships to Madrid, Gallur Municipal Sports Center will dress up again from April 25 to 30 and will turn Madrid into the continental capital of badminton. This tournament will be joined by several of the most outstanding competitions on the international calendar in sports such as athletics, tennis, golf or cycling.
For the Head of the Sports Delegate Area of the Madrid City Council, Sofía Miranda, “it’s a great satisfaction for the City Council to be able to host this great event in this important year for Madrid’s sport. We could not miss the opportunity to attract this great competition to the capital where the best men and women players of the continent will meet, who will surely enjoy the warmth and dedication of the Madrid public“.
Miranda explained that “this 2022 Madrid has become the World Capital of Sports, a title whose objective is to turn our city into a national and international sporting benchmark, and for which the Sports Area of the Madrid City Council has worked hard to fill this year of sport“. “It’s time for the people of Madrid to get excited about a common project again, and being the World Capital of Sport is the first step to recover all the dreams that we have had to postpone,” says Miranda.
The Head of the Delegated Area of Sport considers that “like all the great sporting events that are held in Madrid, it will be reflected in the basic sport for which, prior to the tournament, meetings will be held between the great European badminton players and the Madrid municipal schools , as agreed with the rest of the political groups in Madrid in the Town Pacts, thus making grassroots sport visible within the framework of sporting events organized in our city“.
That the European Badminton Championship can be held in Madrid is also a great satisfaction for the president of the Spanish Badminton Federation, Andoni Azurmendi: “I’m very grateful to Madrid for its willingness from the outset to host the European Championships of our sport and in particular to Sofía Miranda, the Head of the Delegated Area of Sports in the Madrid City Council, for her involvement“. Azurmendi points out that “as the World Capital of Sport that it is, Madrid has demonstrated its firm commitment to hosting an event as important as ours and I am sure that, with its help, we will know how to rise to the occasion“.
The president of FESBA explained: “The organization of the European Championships in Spain is a great challenge for the Spanish Badminton Federation, but at the same time a great satisfaction. As we have already shown, we are amply capable of this and we appreciate the confidence of the European Federation and the Madrid City Council for their support in this project“.
