Spain, a benchmark in the organization of major events
Madrid 2022 is the result of years of commitment, work, and evolution organizing major world badminton sporting events. A strong commitment from the different institutions and organizing committees that have given us the opportunity to make our country protagonist of this sport.
The Madrid 2022 European Badminton Championships have caused furor in the capital of Spain, which is also the 2022 World Capital of Sport. In addition, it should be noted that the largest continental event in this sport has the support of Iberdrola as the main sponsor, as well as high-status sponsors like Banco Santander and ElPozo.
The European Championships held in Huelva 2018 was the starting point for a successful cycle that is writing a new chapter in Madrid 2022. Huelva 2018, which ended with an extraordinary balance in sporting, social and economic terms, has preceded a series of world class events in recent years that have placed Spain in the international spotlight.
Carolina Marín was the big protagonist in Huelva 2018, but there were many other protagonists too: the thousands of fans who attended Palacio de Deportes Carolina Marin, named after this great champion. The outcome was also successful in economic terms, both due to the tourism that reached Huelva capital and due to the media impact of the event too.
The focus of the badminton world changed in August 2018, putting Barcelona in the spotlight celebrating Spain Masters first edition (out of four); a competition included in BWF World Tour international circuit. The following calendar appointments were held in February 2019 and 2020; being this latest edition outlined with the start of COVID-19 pandemic in Spain. The fourth and last tournament of the Spain Masters series was held in Huelva, in May 2021. The four editions of Spain Masters tournament represented the strengthening of Spain as organizer of high class world badminton events.
Both Huelva and Spain proved successfully to be badminton world’s capital by hosting both World Senior and World Championships in November and December 2021, respectively. Events that for the first time in history were held consecutively in the same venue. Spain would therefore become the present maximum target in this sporting discipline.
2022 European Championships will offer Madrid, World Capital of Sport 2022, achance to rise to the occasion and possibly overcome previous sporting challenges. Madrid will once again shine as it did in 2006 with its second World Championships organized in Spain (after Seville in 2001).
The present and future of badminton’s current scenario is based in Spain, which, after Madrid 2022, is preparing more highly challenging events: the Spanish International continues to be a fix mark on the international calendar. We will also see in Spain the European U15 Championships in Ibiza in September and the icing on top of this 2022 will be the individual and team World Junior Championships, which will take place in October in Santander. One more opportunity to place Spain in the badminton spotlight at the highest level and at the fulfilling the expectations once again.
